The Library Network Implements CARL•Solution

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce that The Library Network, a coalition of 50 public libraries in Southeast Michigan, has migrated to TLC’s CARLSolution™ ILS. The Library Network (TLN) used SirsiDynix Symphony as their ILS for the past 15 years. However, TLC’s success with large library systems—and reputation to treat customers as partners—convinced TLN stakeholders, who unanimously agreed to make TLC their ILS provider for the future.

“We appreciated the attention that [TLC] includes for bringing in the user-experience and library feedback within their development processes,” said Director of The Library Network, Jim Pletz.

By choosing TLC, The Library Network joins an effort alongside other CARL library partners to begin implementing the IFLA Library Reference Model later this summer. The IFLA Library Reference Model is also known as the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) in TLC’s trailblazing online public access catalog for search and discovery, CARLConnect Discovery.

“FRBR offers us a fresh perspective on the structure and relationships of bibliographic and authority records, and also a more precise vocabulary to help future cataloging rule makers and system designers in meeting user needs,” according to the Library of Congress.

Through development, CARL creates connections between exact intellectual content and group-works under a single Trusted Record, meeting TLN’s desire to provide end-users with an intuitive design to find, identify, select and obtain library materials. TLC’s development automates connections between various attributes (works), their entities, manifestations (bibliographic records) and items, resulting in a FRBZized product.

“We have valued our time working with TLC on the new, FRBRized, CARLConnect Discovery search and discovery experience,” Pletz said. “Patrons love the new catalog and it’s clear that they especially appreciate CARLConnect Discovery Mobile, including its personalized ‘My Account’ features and geolocation services,” he added, stating that he is confident the updated FRBRized navigation will make a huge impact, as well.

“As we continue to grow our CARL product and customer base,” says TLC’s CEO Annette Harwood Murphy, “TLC remains a leader in support, providing a high-touch and personalized experience for our libraries. We are excited to add TLN’s perspective as a large-consortium to our product development and vision.”

“TLC has a long history of partnering with our library customers and we are extremely pleased to add The Library Network as another partner to the TLC Family and Community,” Murphy said.
