Somerset County Library System of New Jersey Implements CARL•Solution

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce that the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) has successfully migrated to the fully hosted service model of the CARLSolution™ ILS. SCLSNJ serves over 188k residents within their 15 member communities and circulates close to 3 million items annually. They are looking forward to working with TLC to strengthen the offerings that they provide to their staff and patrons.

Previously on the Millenium system from Innovative Interfaces, Inc. for close to 15 years, SCLSNJ is now enjoying the many benefits of CARL, and are especially excited for the CARLConnect Discovery online catalog. “CARLConnect Discovery will allow our patrons to search for what they want – in any format – easier and more effectively. Plus, the new system utilizes a more pleasing and user-friendly interface. I am most excited for what our new ILS means for eCollection readers. If you are an eBook or eAudiobook reader, downloading your next read will now be only one click away,” said SCLSNJ’s Technical Services Manager Rebecca Sandoval Sloat.

SCLSNJ was also impressed with the highly organized migration process and hands-on support they received throughout the process. County Library Administrator, Brian Auger, shared that TLC truly lived up to their reputation for providing leading edge service. “I’ve been working in public libraries since before most were automated, so I’ve seen quite a few systems come, go and merge. This was by far the smoothest install I’ve ever witnessed. CARLSolution staff are professional, collaborative, uber-organized and absolutely committed to our success. They do it right! If you’re evaluating a move to CARLSolution, call us.”

The CARLConnect staff feature set continues to grow with v1.4.4. In this release, the interactions with Item Creation and Maintenance have been enhanced. TLC has also added Staff Security settings for enabling or blocking access to sensitive functions, and options to set default Staff Displays. Users can complete bibliographic record searching from the CARLConnect staff client that offers an advanced search interface and Boolean and shortcut search options, as well.

TLC values the collaborative relationship that has been fostered with SCLSNJ and is eager to help them meet their service level goals and enrich the lives of their community. “Somerset County Library System of New Jersey has been a true partner throughout the migration process and we know that CARLSolution will exceed their expectations,” shared Annette Harwood Murphy, Co-Founder, President/CEO of TLC. “We welcome them to the TLC family and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

TLC has operated continuously under the same ownership since 1974 and employs over 200 people dedicated to delivering enterprise hardware and software solutions to public, school, academic, and special libraries worldwide. Updates to TLC’s CARL Product Line Announced

The Library Corporation has announced the availability of their latest round of development for the CARL product line with the release of CARLX™ v9.5.2, CARLConnect v1.4.4, CARLConnect Discovery v3.3.5, and CARL APIs v1.9.1.

With v9.5.2, CARLX has incorporated MARC 21 Updates 19-24 for bibliographic and authority records. Additionally, new CARLX Cascading Holds concepts are being introduced. CARLX Cascading Holds provides consortia and large public library systems with the ability to more effectively manage hold fulfillment for a single library or group of libraries. In developing business logic that intelligently reviews a hierarchy, hold fulfillment can more effectively make use of local library and nearby library collections, before being moved to the system level. To support this work, updates were made to the CARLCataloging, Circulation Service and the CARLX MARCout Service APIs.

Keeping with the SoLoMo (Social, Local, Mobile) movement, TLC is providing Geolocation Services for CARLConnect Discovery Mobile with v3.3.5. Using the device location, if allowed by the user, the mobile interface will calculate distances to library locations and provide users with the nearest proximity when viewing Locations and Copies. Additionally, new RDA filtering options were added to CARLConnect Discovery to improve the user search experience, based on the new MARC RDA standards, including support for elements exclusive to those using TLC’s RDAExpress™.

TLC is also pleased to announce the beta release of Self CheckConnect! It is the first self check system designed specifically for your library’s youngest users. Integrated into the CARLConnect product line, children and students aged K-12 will enjoy a playful, independent interface for checking out library materials, with options to override a check out limit, if an item has recently been returned.

TLC has operated continuously under the same ownership since 1974 and employs over 200 people dedicated to delivering enterprise hardware and software solutions to public, school, academic, and special libraries worldwide. TLC’s cumulative products are deployed in more than 1,100 organizations, representing over 5,500 locations in North America. The Library Network Selects CARL

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce that The Library Network (TLN), serving 75 libraries in Southeast Michigan, has selected CARLX™ as their next integrated library system. Key to TLN’s selection of TLC are the company’s strong development partnerships, intuitive online public access catalog, and CARL’s close-knit customer base.

TLC truly views its customers as partners and routinely collaborates with libraries to support their service level goals. TLN is especially looking forward to working closely with TLC and other CARL library partners in the project incubation and implementation of the IFLA Library Reference Model, formerly known as the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR). The support of this entity-relationship model for bibliographic records will remove a longstanding pain point in the library community by grouping various formats and editions of these records together and linking them for cataloging and public display, thereby creating a more useful and efficient search experience for library users.

TLC’s collaborative customer base and approach to customer service were important factors in TLN’s decision to implement CARLX. Serving some of the largest and busiest library systems, TLC understands the significance of building a trusting and supportive environment with their customer base. TLN will benefit from a CARL product staff that is comprised of a number of librarians who are uniquely qualified to support them and who understand the varied needs of the library industry. Additionally, TLC’s goal of showcasing each of its libraries strengths, as opposed to providing a one size fits all solution, is appealing to TLN. They are a perfect fit for the forward thinking CARL library community that also calls TLC home. “After evaluating the market, TLN stakeholders unanimously agreed that CARL emerged at the top of the list for our new integrated library system,” shared Jim Peltz, Director of The Library Network. “Their focus on the CARLConnect Discovery online catalog and their commitment to enhancing the user experience will benefit our patrons and staff in exciting new ways. We look forward to this partnership and to joining the TLC family.”

TLC Releases Updates to the CARL Product Line

The Library Corporation has announced the availability of their latest round of development for the CARL product line with the release of CARLX™ v9.5.1, CARLConnect v1.4.3, CARLConnect Discovery v3.3, and CARL APIs v1.9.

TLC maintains its longstanding tradition of being the library platform of choice for local development partnerships and product enhancements through CARLX. Version 9.5.1 offers expanded integration options for CARLX consortia customers and other libraries that use Branch Grouping for their library material acquisitions. This streamlines the electronic ordering process and expands capabilities between TLC and their third party vendor partners for meeting library needs. Updates were also made to create additional staff user security settings that allow ILS administrators even greater flexibility for rolling out features and providing the appropriate access to library staff.

TLC continues to build and improve upon its full featured API offerings as part of the core CARL product line. These APIs are employed for its own in-house ILS development as well, and significant work was completed in v1.9 and CARLConnect v1.4.3 to further enrich the staff user experience. To that end, new
API options were developed to support full Item Maintenance and they are now available to provide new interactions within the web-based staff interface. These features include new APIs to support item lookup, item creation, item edit and item information, as well as details regarding items that are in a particular status.
This development also ties in with TLC’s new SMART PAC functionality, which provides a sophisticated bibliographic search interface for staff users, allowing them to search and select back records for item maintenance and cataloging directly within the CARLConnect staff module.

CARLConnect Discovery Mobile offers services that go beyond basic search and access. In v3.3 development was completed to provide more personalization options for users with the addition of enhanced search result filtering that was built with self-service in mind.

TLC is certified by the U.S. General Services Administration, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, and the Women Owned Small Business Federal Contracting Program. Nashville Public Library and Metro Nashville Public Schools Implement CARL•Solution

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce that the Nashville Public Library System (NPL) and Metro Nashville Public Schools are now live on a joint CARLSolution® integrated library system. NPL migrated from Millennium by Innovative Interfaces Inc., while the Metro Nashville Schools moved to CARLSolution from TLC’s LibrarySolution for Schools®.

Key to the decision to bring both systems onto CARLSolution was the need to truly consolidate the award winning Limitless Libraries partnership that began in 2009. Limitless Libraries is a cooperative program of NPL and Metro Nashville Schools with the goal of improving school libraries, fostering resource sharing between the two institutions, and improving student access to learning materials. Sharing a single ILS removes barriers to access and provides greater ease of use for the partnership. CARLSolution was the best choice to simplify the management of library user accounts, as well as streamline circulation processes. Kent Oliver, NPL’s Library Director, agrees. “Nashville Public Library’s implementation of CARLSolution will enable us to better serve all of our patrons, including students who borrow our materials from their school libraries through our Limitless Libraries partnership with Metro Nashville Schools. CARLSolution provides greater operational connectivity between our library and Nashville’s school libraries. That means school librarians can assist students with borrowing and circulation more easily and have more time – once spent on administrative tasks – to spend with students.”

In addition to combining automation systems to support Limitless Libraries, TLC’s commitment to mobility was a significant factor in the selection of CARL. In fact, the Metro Nashville Schools will exclusively use the modern, intuitive CARLConnect web-based product line at its 128 schools for staff and self-service interactions with the CARL ILS, further increasing efficiencies.

As the recent recipient of the 2017 Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year award, NPL was looking for a system that would partner with them to further identify and fulfill the needs of their diverse communities, and best showcase their vast programs, services and collections. Annette Harwood Murphy, Co-Founder, President/CEO of TLC shared, “TLC has enjoyed a successful collaboration with the Metro Nashville Public Schools for close to 15 years, and we are so honored to continue to work with them and the Nashville Public Library as they move forward on CARLSolution. NPL and Metro Nashville Schools clearly understand the value of partnership through the celebrated Limitless Libraries and the scope of services they provide to their communities, and that makes them an excellent fit to our CARL family.”

TLC’s CARL•Solution Now Integrated with Marmot Library Network’s Pika Discovery Layer

The Library Corporation and Marmot Library Network are pleased to announce the full integration of the CARLSolution ILS with the Pika discovery layer. The partnership began in support of the groundbreaking Limitless Libraries program of the Nashville Public Library (NPL) and Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) as both organizations plan to migrate to the CARLSolution integrated library system in the coming months. Limitless Libraries is a cooperative program between NPL and MNPS with the goal of improving school libraries, fostering resource sharing between the two institutions, and improving student access to learning materials.

Over the years, CARLSolution customers have enjoyed full API coverage, and this collaboration was no exception. Released in 2016, CARLConnect Discovery Mobile was designed with a sleek, responsive platform that dynamically directs users to a mobile version of the online catalog on any smartphone. Some of these include geolocation services, opt-in and notification, mobile app offerings, personalized reading recommendations, and access to a Digital Library Card.

Only customers with experience with these products and services in their libraries were permitted to judge them, resulting in a truly unbiased score. Each judge scored CARLConnect Discovery Mobile on a numeric basis from 1-10 on a series of questions regarding functionality, value, customer service etc.
