The Library Corporation Launches TLC•GO! Mobile App for Public, K-12, and Academic libraries.

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce its new partnership with SOLUS to provide a world-leading mobile library app to customers using their CARL, LibrarySolution, and LibrarySolution for Schools integrated library systems in the public, K-12, and academic library markets.

TLC•Go! will provide an additional option to TLC customers who may already be using the responsive platforms in mobile environments, as well as the mobile app wrapper available with CARL. The new mobile app will provide:

  • A highly configurable Content Management System allowing for logos, colors/fonts, field labels, menu layouts, and ability to schedule content
  • Support of 24 current languages
  • Curbside pickup functionality for libraries that will continue a pick-up service post-COVID
  • A digital library card that can support linked accounts (family members, elder care, etc.)
  • Links to social media feeds and calendar/event programs
  • Ability to search the catalog, place/cancel holds, pay fines (to supported ePayment gateways), switch language, etc.
  • A cost-effective consortium option to allow member libraries to have their own branding, eContent, link to local calendar and social media feeds at a fraction of the price of a full app
  • Optional contactless self-checkout via RFID or barcode for borrowers using their own smartphone
  • Scan ISBN of book at local bookstores, friends, etc. to determine if item is at the local or school library

Latest CARL Product Release Highlights Public Library Patrons

The Library Corporation (TLC) has just announced the latest release of the CARL suite of integrated library software, including features targeted at providing inclusive library features and pleasant patron experiences, in addition to enhancing library staff workflows and providing additional customization options to meet their libraries’ community needs. This summer release includes CARLX version 9.6.9, CARLConnect Staff version 1.6.5, CARLConnect Discovery version 3.6.3, and CARL APIs version 1.9.9.

CARL customers who joined the Release Demo this month were enthusiastic. Wennie Fleming, ILS Librarian at Loudoun County Public Library, shared, “Love all of these new changes for CARLX, CARLConnect Staff and CARLConnect Discovery!! TLC nailed it again.” Likewise, Lynn Hoffman, Director of Operations at Somerset County Library System of New Jersey, expressed that “These CARLConnect Staff updates are game-changers!”

A longstanding patron frustration in the library industry has been when an item on their account is unable to be renewed because a hold has been placed on the title, even though patrons can see additional copies available on shelf. The latest CARL release addresses this concern by comparing the number of holds currently placed on a title against the number of copies available on shelf that could fulfill the outstanding holds, and allowing the renewal if the available items to holds ratio meets library-defined parameters. This comparison happens at the point of renewal via staff access, within the patron’s account, and during auto-renewal.

Another patron-focused enhancement allows libraries to customize the number of days before a patron account is blocked when an item on their account is overdue. A nuanced approach to the Fine Free movement taking place in libraries, this setting will continue to incentivize the return of materials without creating a financial impact to patrons.

Along the lines of community inclusion, a new Account field for Full Legal Name — in addition to the current first and last name fields — will allow libraries more flexibility to use a patron’s preferred name without losing the legal name.

Patrons will continue to have control over the privacy of their Loan History, now with the ability to let library staff view that history. Keeping patron privacy at the forefront of this functionality in current and previous versions, patrons who wished to view their previous loans had to opt-in to the service. This latest improvement adds another layer of opt-in security, to expand privileges for library staff to view the history, such as when troubleshooting or curating personalized reading recommendations.

These features join many more in the latest CARL product suite release. Some of these enhancements include improved lightbox check-in alerts in the web-based circulation client, new customization options for receipts, improved series discovery in the online catalog, updates to the underlying Java foundation and security attributes, and more. Frederick County Public Libraries Choose CARL

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce that Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) in Frederick County, Maryland, have chosen the CARL product suite as their next generation Library Management Platform.

Located approximately 50 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and 50 miles west of Baltimore, MD, FCPL joins their local school system, Frederick County Public Schools, as customers of TLC. The school system has been utilizing LibrarySolution since 2008. The youngest borrowers in Frederick will be pleased to find a similar user experience when they enter the public library, as both systems utilize the same framework for the young adult discovery layers.

Adult borrowers will be excited to find CARLConnect Discovery, a “game-changer” according to FCPL staff members. Not only does CARLConnect Discovery incorporate the power of FRBR, but borrowers will also be offered a more personalized experience through TLC’s recommendation feature for enhanced title suggestions.

Early in the implementation process, TLC has already shown itself incredibly responsive to FCPL’s questions and commitment to creating the best system for their borrowers. Much of this can be attributed to TLC’s staff creating an implementation schedule that is carefully organized to allow FCPL to thoughtfully plan out and become accustomed to new workflows. According to Cindy Phillips, CARL’s Implementation Manager, “TLC creates a custom implementation schedule for each new customer to be sure that both parties are informed of the steps and phases of the project. A strong plan means we stay on track and provide an outstanding migration process. We consistently receive excellent feedback from our customers on our migrations.”

Latest CARL Features Promote Library-Centric Workflows

The Library Corporation (TLC) develops software with an understanding of library workflows and the needs of TLC customers in mind. With the latest product release of the CARL integrated library system, TLC continues to provide features that improve operational efficiency, which can be found in CARLX™ version 9.6.8, CARLConnect Staff version 1.6.4, CARLConnect Discovery version 3.6.2.1 and CARLX™ APIs version 1.9.8.

One feature that helps librarians save time when handling items in a damaged or less-than-ideal condition is the new Damaged Items functionality in CARLConnect Staff. Library staff can mark items as Damaged, which will automatically perform the next actions for those items — remove from the patron account if checked out, change item status to Damaged, replace the hold if checking it in would have filled a hold — all in one place and with one scan.

“TLC nailed the ‘Damage’ check in,” said Wennie Fleming, the ILS Librarian of Technology Services at Loudoun County Public Library. “What was a 21 step process for staff is now simply two steps! This functionality available in both CARLX 9.6.8 and CARLConnect Staff 1.6.4 is amazing and will save tons of time for staff.” As with all CARL features, the Damaged Items page meets compliance for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for improved accessibility.

Another favorite of TLC customers and TLC Staff is the updated Not Found functionality, now called Wander List, in CARLConnect Staff. In previous versions, items which had not been found on the shelves from the Fill List (holds pulling process) were added to the Not Found list for later handling. As items tend to wander off the shelves and out existence at the library, items not found from Fill Lists, Missing Lists, and Lost Lists can all be managed within the Wander List feature.

The latest updates now also include capabilities for library staff to withdraw or check in items directly from the Wander List, and display updated status columns and number of title holds for easy reference and convenience. As Manager for the CARL Product, Ebony Pacheco-Hoos says, “Not all items that wander are lost.” These updates allow library staff to manage wandering items with fewer clicks and fewer screens.

These latest features join others in the CARL product suite update targeted at efficient library workflows, improved technical foundations, and further Mobile version development, which was an overall priority CARL customers shared with TLC staff at the annual user conference. Additional updates include Google Analytics integration, customizable Hold Shelf Expiration days, new tokens in Message Editor, customer-requested spine label sizes, check in sounds, FRBRized title details within mobile, enhanced location settings, and reverse chronological magazine and serials displays.

TLC Completes Milestone Migration to TLC•Cloud Services

The Library Corporation (TLC) has completed its fifth customer migration to its latest cloud hosting model: TLC•Cloud Services. Five distinctive library systems from around the country and internationally have partnered with TLC to successfully migrate their integrated library systems into the new cloud platform, with more customers scheduled for migrations later this year and beyond.

TLC unveiled its third-generation hosting model, TLC•Cloud Services, at its annual user conference in October 2019, with the first customers making the migration as early as February 2020. Prior to the cloud model, TLC’s hosted customer data was held in a co-location model, with data services out of Ashburn, Virginia, and outside Denver, Colorado for LibrarySolution® and CARLX™ customers, respectively.

The cloud service hosting platform, provided via Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), adds an extra layer of data security to the already high level of security delivered on the co-location hosting solution. Additional features provided on the OCI platform allow TLC customers more geographic data residency and backup options. Chief Technology Officer for TLC, Justin Duewel-Zahniser, shared that the TLC•Cloud Services solution, “coupled with our policies and procedures and philosophy around handling customer data, gives customers one less thing to worry about as they navigate the 21st century security landscape.”

eBiblioFile Now Serves Former RBdigital Customers Enhanced Data

With the recent acquisition of RBdigital by OverDrive, TLC is pleased to announce that all former RBdigital customers are now eligible to utilize eBiblioFile, an on-demand MARC record service for eBooks and other downloadable titles. This service has been available to OverDrive customers as well as cloudLibrary™ by bibliotheca customers.

As libraries enter into the tenth month of a global pandemic, many are facing uncertain futures as they grapple with pending closures, social distancing guidelines and protocols, and a public that may be reluctant to enter indoor public areas. Neither public libraries nor school libraries are immune to this struggle. 

One thing that many libraries can attest to is the growth and demand in eBooks. Julie Harder, a Teacher Librarian at Pattonville School District, shared, “Between August and November of 2019 compared to August and November in 2020, we’ve seen a 144% increase in our e-resource use. Since kids now know how to access books any time and any place, we’re going to continue to see this increased use. So I think we need to start putting more of our budget toward electronic resources.”

The next step after adding e-content to a library’s collection is for the library’s community to be able to discover the content in the catalog. Data-rich records are crucial for this to happen.

Now Live on CARL•X: OWLSnet Consortia Implemented New Integrated Library System 100% Virtually.

The newest library system to implement TLC’s CARLX integrated library software is the Outagamie Waupaca Library System’s shared automation network (OWLSnet). This library system, which went live on August 17, 2020, is a public library consortium consisting of 29 libraries with 49 locations that stretch across two library systems in northeast Wisconsin.

OWLSnet has many distinctions among CARLX’s family of customers. Not only is the library excited to experience CARLConnect Fill List for paperless holds pulling, but they are also one of the first systems using FRBRized views in CARLConnect Discovery and hosting through TLCCloud Services by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. OWLSnet is also the first customer to ever launch CARLX entirely remotely — without TLC staff on-site to assist.

“Halfway into our migration, we had to suddenly switch gears,” said Amanda Lee, OWLSnet Manager. Before the pandemic, their team would meet remotely with TLC, then gather in-person to go over migration workbooks. Once the pandemic forced the library to go virtual, they had to meet exclusively online, while figuring out what their workflows would look like with a new ILS in different phases of re-opening. 

Lee went on to say, “It’s been a very positive experience during a very stressful time. The implementation team were pros all the way. I think having the strong project management plan helped keep us on track when everything was changing and up in the air.”

TLC’s CARLX team, located in Denver, switched gears on their end as well. TLC is proudly the industry’s leader in providing customized, hands-on, thorough implementation processes, and figured out how to provide the same level of service in an entirely remote environment. They established new ways of communicating with each other and their OWLSnet partners, while preparing to train library staff online, through instructor-led and independent exercises, and recorded content. 

Cindy Phillips, TLC’s Project Manager leading the OWLSnet implementation, shared that, “Migrating a customer to a new system takes a strong team and that was even more necessary for the OWLSnet migration during a pandemic! We were fortunate to have such a great partner in OWLSnet to work with and a resilient team in Denver to pull it all off remotely.”

This release addresses additional customer priorities that will extend into CARL’s second release coming later this year. Also included is a new implementation of Authorize.net Accept Hosted integration for eCommerce payments.

CARLConnect Staff 9.6.6 development focused on foundational changes to support TLC’s newest CARL customer coming on board this summer. The CARL team also added functionality that gives consortia libraries more flexibility in determining parameters for holds.

With CARLConnect Staff 1.6.2, TLC is excited to provide libraries with updates and refinements in order to allow staff to better serve their customers when dealing with fines and fees on the patron’s account. The CARL team has also advanced Fill List functionality to further meet ADA compliance requirements, adding changes in support of user-centered design.

In CARLConnect Discovery 3.6.1, via My Account in Mobile, TLC has revealed the ability to place Issue Level holds, see Saved Searches and Saved Lists, as well as patron Loan History, if opted-in to this feature. Libraries already enjoy CARLConnect Discovery’s landing page for marketing and highlighting their collections and now TLC has introduced general alerts and customer announcements to both desktop and mobile.
