50th Anniversary Spotlight: Annette H. Murphy

Celebrating 50 Years of TLC: An Ode to our Co-founder, Annette H. Murphy

As we look back on the last 50 years of The Library Corporation, it’s only natural to reflect on the visionary behind it all: Annette H. Murphy. Her unwavering dedication, pioneering spirit, and profound love for libraries have left an indelible mark on not only TLC, but the entire library profession.

In an era where change is the only constant, TLC has stood steadfast in its commitment to libraries. From its inception in 1974, the company’s mission has been clear: to provide unparalleled services and products tailored exclusively for the library community. This dedication to libraries remains the top priority, even as the world around us evolves.

Central to TLC’s ethos is its emphasis on superior customer service. Mrs. Murphy’s vision of fostering a familial atmosphere within the company has ensured that TLC remains more than just a vendor; it’s a trusted partner. Libraries know they can rely on TLC for both cutting-edge technology and for the unwavering support of a dedicated team.

Over the past five decades, TLC has been at the forefront of library innovation, constantly adapting to emerging trends and technologies. From pioneering the use of CD-ROMs for record searching to offering the first online public access catalog (PAC), TLC has consistently pushed the boundaries to empower libraries and the communities they serve.

When asked about her proudest moments, Mrs. Murphy’s response reflects the breadth of TLC’s contributions to the library profession. The company began its tenure in the industry with milestones like MARCfiche and BiblioFile, and progressed to the revolutionary integrated library systems (ILS) and online PAC. Each product represents the transformative leap forward for libraries worldwide.

TLC has embarked on a year-long celebration of its achievements, marked by sparkling cider toasts, the launch of a new online merchandise store, a reception at PLA, and a variety of events that serve as a testament to TLC’s enduring commitment to its employees, customers, and the broader library community. Yet, it’s clear that Mrs. Murphy’s vision extends far beyond just the festivities.

Looking ahead to the next 50 years, Mrs. Murphy’s boundless ambition and belief in the power of imagination offer a glimpse into what the future may hold. Her prediction: “What you will see in the next 50 years depends on whether or not we listen to the dreamers and people with great imaginations.” In a world where the imaginings of far-out dreamers become reality, TLC’s role as a catalyst for change and innovation is more distinct than ever. Annette H. Murphy is a true trailblazer in the world of libraries.

Remaining a change agent is vital to staying ahead of the technology curve. In Mrs. Murphy’s own words: “If you don’t have enough confidence, you let others intimidate you.” TLC remains unintimidated as we celebrate our extraordinary 50-year journey and confidently continue to provide stability, excellence, and unparalleled service.

Cheers to the next 50 years of innovation, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to libraries everywhere. Happy anniversary, TLC!

TLC’s ITS•MARC Cataloging Service Receives Another Platinum Award

The Library Corporation (January 11, 2024) —  The Library Corporation (TLC) is honored to receive another platinum distinction for ITSMARC in LibraryWorks’ tenth annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs). With access to over 82.9 million records, including both bibliographic and authority records, TLC’s online copy cataloging has provided a noteworthy alternative to records provided directly from the book vendor.

TLC is celebrating 50 years of delivering quality solutions to libraries worldwide since introducing a source of MARC records on microfiche in 1974. Since then, TLC has been a leader in metadata, with its cataloging services getting better every year. After partnering with additional library contributors to grow its copy cataloging service in 2022, TLC is honored that this improvement has culminated in a platinum MLA for the second year in a row.

“This product has saved us a lot of time and money,” shared one anonymous judge. “It has saved us staff time for sure but it also has enabled us to stop purchasing MARC records from our book vendors. It is also super easy to use and has a modern interface.”

The MLAs were created to recognize top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Products and services were submitted in the fall of 2023 and sent to the LibraryWorks database of more than 80,000 librarians at public, K-12, academic, and special libraries.

Only customers with experience using ITSMARC in their libraries were permitted to judge, resulting in a truly unbiased score. Each judge scored the library management system on a numeric basis from 1-10 on a series of questions regarding functionality, value, customer services, etc.

The resource scored highest in the following categories:

  • Quality of the service delivered by TLC: 9.56
  • Satisfaction with TLC, the company providing ITSMARC: 9.33

ITSMARC is an ILS-agnostic service that draws its records from 23 separate databases, including voluntarily contributed records from public libraries, school libraries, and consortia across the country.

Another anonymous judge shared: “Using ITSMARC has allowed me to get the most descriptive cataloging of new materials added to our library collection. Any time I have needed assistance in the past, TLC has been responsive and quick, always to my satisfaction.”

For more information and to sign up for a 90-day risk-free trial of ITSMARC visit itsmarc.com or contact sales@tlcdelivers.com.

Latest CARL•Solution Release Introduces Much-Anticipated Features

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce the latest release of the CARLSolution integrated library system. Based directly on their feedback, customers will enjoy a redesigned interface in CARLConnect Staff, new Holds Management functionality, and the addition of PayPal as an eCommerce option for CARLConnect Discovery Desktop and Mobile. Development also focused on updates to existing functionality and emerging needs and priorities.

Library staff will notice a newly redesigned interface for CARLConnect Staff Items. After gathering feedback from customers about the previous format, TLC developers worked to introduce the intuitive grid view that has become a standard of CARLSolution. The page now allows users with the appropriate permissions the ability to access the “add an item” page with one simple click of a button. Holds counts and statistical information at the bibliographic and item level are available in an easy-to-read view at the top.

“We are building CARLConnect to be a comprehensive solution,” shared Ebony Pacheco-Hoos, Director of Product Management, Publics. “Feedback from our customers is critical as we refactor the web-based experience.”

The release introduces Holds Management functionality into CARLConnect, an adaption from the previously available CARLX windows-based features. The Holds grid allows staff to work with items on the Hold Shelf or In Transit to their branch. Staff can see a large amount of data within the grid, and work directly with specific items. TLC has added the ability to Cancel a Hold or to Clear an Expired hold from this title-level interface, with additional actions planned for future releases. In addition, the Claim Returned functionality can now be accessed in the User Overview Interactions. This permissions-based functionality allows staff to select Claim Returned from the Checkouts tab of User Overview, and select one or more branches to complete the claim.

Accessibility remains a top consideration when features are moved from CARLX to CARLConnect. “As we develop, we evaluate WCAG-friendly design on all of our new pages, and re-evaluate on any pages that we update,” stated Jessica Seybold, CARLSolution Product Owner and UX designer.

This release unrolls PayPal as an additional eCommerce option for CARLConnect Discovery Desktop and Mobile. PayPal implementation offers users a PayPal button directly from the My Account Fines page. Since eCommerce remains a local configuration-based setting, libraries can choose one eCommerce option per configuration; it is possible to use a combination of multiple eCommerce options such as PayPal and Authorize.Net within a library system, on a configuration basis.

Other features in this release further support TLC’s security-first design principles, providing a secure client connection without the need for a VPN tunnel. Development also included updated server thread handling which will improve behind-the-scenes processes for SIP2, authority changes, and global updates. Additionally, the Google Analytics integration was updated to reference the latest code.

The latest release of CARLSolution includes CARLX version 9.7.3, CARLConnect Staff version 1.6.9, CARLConnect Discovery version 3.6.7, and CARLAPIs version 2.0.3.

La Porte County Public Library Keeps Innovating with Move to CARL•Solution

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce the completed implementation of the CARLSolution integrated library system for La Porte County Public Library (LPCPL) in La Porte, Indiana. TLC completed migration services for the eight-site library earlier in the year to facilitate partnerships with their local schools, implement native self-check software, and provide sleek new searching capabilities.

Fonda Owens, Director of LPCPL, shared their history of seeking an ILS that could help with their collaboration with their public school partners, which was important in their library’s mission. Through their Libraries 360 program, the library is able to share resources with educators and students all year. This includes Libraries 360 cards, which can be used at all LPCPL locations year-round, as well as access to e-Resources available online, anytime from home. They worked their way through several different vendors and found that the collaboration piece needed in their previous ILS was not fully functional, or the price to add that feature would be astronomical.

LPCPL finally found the functionality they had been searching for with TLC and started their journey in 2019 with the LibrarySolution ILS. As their needs and focus on school and community collaboration continued to grow, they began to explore TLC’s other ILS offering, CARLSolution, preferring to stay within the TLC family. Recognizing that CARLSolution customers are innovative, forward-thinking libraries, Owens states proudly, “I keep telling people, we think big around here.”

One aspect of the library’s big plans included adding self-check modules for the school partners they work with throughout the year to handle circulation and manage collections, in addition to the other branches. Owens shares that the school partners have been very excited about Self CheckConnect. The library is equally excited about collecting additional statistics through ad hoc reporting to offer the partners, with Owens asserting, “We have all kinds of hopes and dreams and plans for that data.”

The transition has gone smoothly for staff and community alike. Owens believes staff were less intimidated from the beginning because they were already comfortable with LibrarySolution. They appreciate the tremendous support provided by TLC, from having the training sandbox (Test environment) always available, to on-site training from the implementation team, to monthly customer care calls. Owens noted a big difference with TLC, saying, “It’s really nice to be able to meet with the product owners. That never happens with other companies. It’s different here with TLC.”

Cindy Phillips, Manager of Implementation and Training for CARLSolution, commented, “The La Porte staff were great to work with. They provide excellent library services to their community and are a great new partner with CARLSolution.”

With a similar patron interface, the La Porte community did not notice much change to service, except for two new features that have been quite popular: the new PIN option and the FRBRized group title display. Customers have been “absolutely delighted” with the ability to choose a shorter, quicker option for their PIN. However, the star has really been with FRBR, as Owens exclaims, “The grouped search results aspect to the catalog is pretty magical. I think it’s the way people are accustomed to searching these days.” The multi-award winning FRBR online catalog displays a single entry for a work instead of numerous entries for each format and edition. Doing so gives library users a clear and trustworthy view of the library collection.

Not wanting to focus solely on the public side of the switch, Owens also shared that the catalogers are really happy with how their cataloging and acquisitions tasks are going after the transition. As an ITSMARC contributor, LPCPL works diligently to maintain the quality of their records since they know ITSMARC subscribers in libraries all over the world rely on their accuracy. The high-quality online copy cataloging service from TLC provides access to over 81 million records, including both bibliographic and authority records. ITSMARC recently received a platinum distinction in LibraryWorks’ ninth annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs).

Part of the Northwest Indiana and Michiana regions of the Chicago metropolitan area, LPCPL serves a population of approximately 60,000. It includes over 210,000 titles and an expected 800,000 annual transactions.

TLC’s FRBR Catalog Receives Another Platinum Award

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to receive a platinum distinction for consecutive years for CARLConnect Discovery Grouped Title Display in LibraryWorks’ ninth annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs). The multi-honoree FRBRized online catalog, released in 2018, uses Trusted Records to link titles together for an enhanced search experience.

Grouped Title Display functionality in CARLConnect Discovery displays a single entry for a work instead of numerous entries for each format and edition. Grouping multiple editions and formats of a bibliographic record give library users a clear and trustworthy view of the library collection. CARLSolution customers have been included in the development of Grouped Title Display from its inception, with active feedback reflected in the product.

The MLAs were created to recognize top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Products and services were submitted in the fall of 2022, batched into small groups, and sent to the LibraryWorks database of more than 80,000 librarians at public, K-12, academic, and special libraries.

Only customers with experience using CARLConnect Discovery Grouped Title Displays in their libraries were permitted to judge, resulting in a truly unbiased score. Each judge scored CARLConnect Discovery Grouped Title Displays on a numeric basis from 1-10 on a series of questions regarding functionality, value, customer services, etc.

The catalog received an overall score of 9.4, and no score less than 9.0. Based on customer feedback, the following categories received the highest scores:

  • Quality of CARLConnect Discovery Grouped Title Display: 9.5
  • CARLConnect Discovery vs. competitive/similar products: 9.75
  • Satisfaction with TLC, the company providing CARLConnect Discovery: 9.75

One customer shared anonymously, “We are delighted with TLC’s CARLConnect Discovery Grouped Title Display! They are very responsive to their customer’s development wishes. I can see the product only getting better as development continues.”

Jenny Newman, publisher and MLA program manager said, “It’s hardly a surprise that TLC’s online catalog scored so well again this year. Libraries are trending more toward catalogs that highlight the collection in a modern interface.”

Latest Advancements for TLC’s CARL•Solution Integrated Library System

The Library Corporation (TLC) develops with the modern library in mind. With the latest product release of the CARLSolution integrated library system, TLC continues its web-based product developments for a more complete online experience. The release includes new functionality in CARLX version 9.7.2, CARLConnect Staff version 1.6.8, CARLConnect Discovery version 3.6.6, and CARLSolution APIs version 2.0.2.

CARLSolution Acquisitions have long been an advanced module in the CARLX windows-based client. The latest release brings more of those capabilities into the CARLConnect web-based solution. Enhancements include invoice retrieval and display, plus related granular APIs. Library staff with permissions can access a grid of invoices with orders and special charges displayed.

Similar workflow enhancements continue throughout this CARLSolution release. Library staff will enjoy sticky grid sizing options and new information returned from BID searches. Patrons will appreciate the updated Saved Lists experience. Now, borrowers can view item availability without an extra click, with defaults for their preferred branch in place. The product team considers accessibility and overall customer satisfaction in every release.

Additionally, CARLSolution stands out with its granular permissions and administrative capabilities. New developments provide better control over branch hours without support intervention. More settings allow for varied privileges toward engaging with lost items and patrons with blocks.

TLC continues its enhancements around shelf management and inventory processes. Now, CARLSolution integrates with RFID inventory wands, such as the CircTrak from Tech Logic. Items now include a “Last Seen Date” for better collection tracking and in-house circulation reports.

Over 81% of CARLSolution customers have upgraded to the latest version since its release earlier this fall, with more in the queue. Many CARLSolution customers previewed upcoming functionality at TLC’s annual user conference, TLCU 2022, and have expressed great excitement for features to come.

The latest release of CARLSolution is available now. For a demo or for more information, please contact sales@TLCdelivers.com.
