TLC Statement on Student Privacy in Library•Solution for Schools

TLC strongly considers student data privacy while developing the features requested by our customers. TLC has no plans to pursue development that would negatively impact student privacy but recognizes that we may be requested to do so by customers seeking to comply with local laws. In such cases, our intent would be to provide as much control as necessary to each customer to achieve the balance required in their district between privacy and compliance with applicable laws.

To give an illustrative example, librarians became concerned in the early 2000s about the Patriot Act enabling national security letters to libraries to compel patron and student loan histories. TLC implemented a control allowing each library system to opt-in or out of retaining loan history beyond the active period of the loan. This put the control at the customer level as to how best to discharge their mission while complying with applicable law. We believe this is a good pattern to replicate whenever possible, as opposed to TLC making a policy decision on behalf of all of our customers which some prefer, but puts others at compliance or legal risk.

LibrarySolution for Schools does not include parental control features, such as limiting or filtering search results or parental overrides on student access to library materials. In 2019 a large progressive district development partner requested that we provide more than one email field for notifications, facilitating parental notification of circulation statuses if their email is added to the student profile. This feature was not developed as parental control. It appears to have been motivated by overdue and loss rates within the district. The system default does not provide a check-out notification to a party other than the student. Additionally, should a district decide to use a paper checkout receipt or no checkout receipt, no check-out notification is provided via email to any recipient.

TLC Caters to Customers with Latest Library•Solution Release

The Library Corporation (TLC) announces the latest release of their LibrarySolution integrated library system: version 5.6.5. The latest customer-driven development improves Authority Control, user experiences, partner integrations, and more.

Catalogers using LibrarySolution may already be familiar with its powerful Authority Control. The latest update increases matching on ITSMARC and local authorities by 10-15%. Local unverified authorities are now also eligible for matching. Additionally, TLC expanded glossaries for terms from multiple source vocabularies. The source is now also displayed in the title editor, for preferred term selection. These improved data consistencies enhance search and discovery and reduce authority management tasks.

Additionally, catalogers can now select many terms for repeatable fields, with duplicate prevention. Repeatable fields include Awards, Genres, Subject Subdivision, and Contributor Roles. Based on customer requests, TLC added new relator terms for improved search. These include cover artist, inker, letterer, penciler, writer, writer of foreword, and writer of afterword.

This latest release also includes improvements for Reports in LibrarySolution. For a better user experience, more reports display book jackets pulled from the title’s ISBN. More reports also include a click-through link straight into the cataloging module. This streamlines report-based database management. Other usability improvements throughout this release target navigation, reducing both keystrokes and clicks.

“The solutions we provide to our customers are directly based on feedback and the use cases we hear from them,” said Sam Brenizer, Director of Product Management for LibrarySolution. “Between focus groups and the suggestions customers submit, we have been able to create value that fits our community’s growing needs.”

To maintain and strengthen partnerships with third-party vendors, TLC updated data extraction capabilities. Extractable item holdings codes and granular block statuses will improve inter-library resource sharing — especially for customers using INN-Reach. Development also focused on integrations with OverDrive and Syndetics Unbound.

The latest release of LibrarySolution is available now. Customers who choose to upgrade may submit a ticket to begin scheduling the upgrade process. More information is available in the Release Notes on LSCommunity.

Bryan + College Station Library Migrates to TLC for Efficiency and Security

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce the recent implementation of LibrarySolution for Bryan + College Station Public Library System (BCS). TLC completed the migration services for the three-site library system from their Polaris integrated library system earlier this month.

BCS serves a population of approximately 200,000 residents across the twin cities of Bryan and College Station in the Brazos Valley of Texas — including a collection of over 172,000 titles and more than 210,000 items.

In addition to the integrated library system and support services provided by TLC, BCS has implemented TLC•Cloud Services underpinned by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, as well as enriched OPAC services via Syndetics Unbound, and TLC’s ITSMARC subscription service for bibliographic and authority records.

Two main factors that played into the decision included cost effectiveness and increased efficiencies. The library website shared: “This change will result in cost savings, increase workflow efficiencies, and allow us to move to a cloud-based platform.” LibrarySolution’s seamless ebook integration service “will allow us to manage both print and online resources within one system. This greatly simplifies our work to make our online collections available.”

Another important factor apparent in the library’s decision to migrate included an emphasis on cybersecurity. BCS evaluated a number of cybersecurity factors — including overall security posture, data storage in the U.S. with regular and two-way encrypted backups, offsite backups, regular penetration testing, frequency of software updates, server hardening, regular security patching of servers, and personnel training in security. “Of the 6 or 7 vendors that we looked at,” stated Wendell Gragg, the Automation Services Supervisor at BCS, “TLC was superior to the other products.”

“TLC does not treat security as an afterthought,” shared Annette Murphy, CEO of TLC. “We are glad to welcome Bryan + College Station Public Library System into the TLC family, and we look forward to hosting the library for many years to come.”

Bryan + College Station Public Library System’s enriched and cloud hosted catalog can be viewed at bcslibrary.tlcdelivers.com. For more information on LibrarySolution, please visit TLCdelivers.com or speak to a representative at sales@tlcdelivers.com.

TLC Welcomes the Return of J Robert Jamerson Memorial Library to Library•Solution

The Library Corporation (TLC) welcomes the return of another former customer to LibrarySolution. J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library (JRJML) migrated away from the open-source Koha platform supported by Bywater Solutions and returned to TLC — their previous library management vendor of 22 years prior to 2014.

Located 200 miles from TLC’s Headquarters office in Inwood, West Virginia, the single-site library sits in the heart of the historically significant town of Appomattox, Virginia. The library serves approximately 16,000 residents across the county with over 32,000 titles.

In addition to the integrated library system and support services provided by TLC, JRJML has also implemented enriched OPAC services via Syndetics Unbound and will be utilizing TLC’s ITSMARC subscription service for bibliographic and authority records.

“After 7 years away, the J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library is excited to be a returning TLC library partner,” stated Diana Harvey, Director for J. Robert Jamerson Memorial Library. “As an organization we feel that TLC will provide a modern and easy to navigate Public Access Catalog to our community as well as excellent customer service to our staff.”

Annette Murphy, TLC’s CEO and founder, was pleased to welcome back the library and shared, “J. Robert Jamerson marks the fourth library this year to return to the TLC family, and we look forward to supporting them for many more years to come.”

JRJML’s enriched catalog can be viewed at pac.jrjml.org. For more information on LibrarySolution, please visit TLCdelivers.com or speak to a representative at sales@tlcdelivers.com.
