TLC Toasts to 50 Years at AASL 2023 – Booth #623

The Library Corporation (TLC) invites attendees of AASL 2023 to visit Booth #623 for a sparkling cider toast in honor of the company’s 50th anniversary. More recently, TLC has launched Report Dashboards to make enterprise-level data analysis available at a glance.

Attendees are encouraged to join us for a sparkling cider toast on opening night to see how much TLC has influenced library technology in the last 50 years and remains a strong option for the school libraries of today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Founded in 1974, The Library Corporation (TLC) is thrilled to be celebrating 50 years in business in 2024! TLC has remained a beacon of excellence in library technology since it was founded by the family that still owns and operates the company today. To mark this monumental milestone and honor the library professionals who contributed through the years, TLC will host multiple celebrations throughout the year.

As a woman-owned, privately held company, TLC has remained true to its values of providing cutting-edge solutions, while upholding patron privacy and integrity. Being privately held ensures that TLC’s focus is always on the needs of libraries and the communities they serve.

“We are excited to share this significant moment with you and express our gratitude for your continued support,” conveyed Annette Murphy, CEO and founder. “Thank you for being a part of TLC’s success story for 50 excellent years in the industry, and for many more to come.”

The year-long celebration starts early with a sparkling cider toast at the 2023 American Association of School Librarians (AASL) conference later this month, and will continue through 2024.

Between multiple festivities, exciting promotions and giveaways, a virtual museum, and more, library professionals are invited to join the journey through TLC’s rich history of stability, excellence, and unparalleled support. Latest CARL•Solution Release Introduces Much-Anticipated Features

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce the latest release of the CARLSolution integrated library system. Based directly on their feedback, customers will enjoy a redesigned interface in CARLConnect Staff, new Holds Management functionality, and the addition of PayPal as an eCommerce option for CARLConnect Discovery Desktop and Mobile. Development also focused on updates to existing functionality and emerging needs and priorities.

Library staff will notice a newly redesigned interface for CARLConnect Staff Items. After gathering feedback from customers about the previous format, TLC developers worked to introduce the intuitive grid view that has become a standard of CARLSolution. The page now allows users with the appropriate permissions the ability to access the “add an item” page with one simple click of a button. Holds counts and statistical information at the bibliographic and item level are available in an easy-to-read view at the top.

“We are building CARLConnect to be a comprehensive solution,” shared Ebony Pacheco-Hoos, Director of Product Management, Publics. “Feedback from our customers is critical as we refactor the web-based experience.”

The release introduces Holds Management functionality into CARLConnect, an adaption from the previously available CARLX windows-based features. The Holds grid allows staff to work with items on the Hold Shelf or In Transit to their branch. Staff can see a large amount of data within the grid, and work directly with specific items. TLC has added the ability to Cancel a Hold or to Clear an Expired hold from this title-level interface, with additional actions planned for future releases. In addition, the Claim Returned functionality can now be accessed in the User Overview Interactions. This permissions-based functionality allows staff to select Claim Returned from the Checkouts tab of User Overview, and select one or more branches to complete the claim.

Accessibility remains a top consideration when features are moved from CARLX to CARLConnect. “As we develop, we evaluate WCAG-friendly design on all of our new pages, and re-evaluate on any pages that we update,” stated Jessica Seybold, CARLSolution Product Owner and UX designer.

This release unrolls PayPal as an additional eCommerce option for CARLConnect Discovery Desktop and Mobile. PayPal implementation offers users a PayPal button directly from the My Account Fines page. Since eCommerce remains a local configuration-based setting, libraries can choose one eCommerce option per configuration; it is possible to use a combination of multiple eCommerce options such as PayPal and Authorize.Net within a library system, on a configuration basis.

Other features in this release further support TLC’s security-first design principles, providing a secure client connection without the need for a VPN tunnel. Development also included updated server thread handling which will improve behind-the-scenes processes for SIP2, authority changes, and global updates. Additionally, the Google Analytics integration was updated to reference the latest code.

The latest release of CARLSolution includes CARLX version 9.7.3, CARLConnect Staff version 1.6.9, CARLConnect Discovery version 3.6.7, and CARLAPIs version 2.0.3.

Pickens County Library System Makes the Switch to TLC

Pickens County Library System (PCLS) now has better reporting, collection curation, and staff operations after switching to the LibrarySolution integrated library system (ILS) from The Library Corporation (TLC). Over the summer, TLC completed migration services for the four-site South Carolina library system from the SirsiDynix Horizon ILS.

“We chose TLC for ease of use and better/easier access to reports,” shared Jennifer Bryan, Public Relations/Media Specialist for PCLS. “We are also looking forward to being more efficient in our day-to-day operations.”

When selecting TLC as its new vendor, PCLS was very impressed with the reporting capabilities offered in LibrarySolution. Bryan remarked that while patrons might not immediately notice changes to the ILS, “behind-the-scenes processes will be improved resulting in a better library experience. For instance, expanded access to reporting will allow for more finite details to be considered in collection development decisions, resulting in a better-curated collection for the community.”

The migration from their previous vendor to TLC went smoothly, with Bryan commenting, “The best part of the process has been the training and support that TLC staff have provided. They have walked us through every step and been available for questions. Their trainer spent three days on-site with us during the launch to train staff and help answer questions.” As a result, the library feels confident and pleased that they made the switch to TLC.

“We are thrilled to welcome Pickens County Library System to the TLC family,” said Annette Murphy, TLC CEO. “The library will surely benefit from our extensive reporting power and data analytics.”

Pickens County Library System is located along the northern border of South Carolina and provides access to over 234,000 titles, with more than 700,000 circulations annually.

Logan Library Finds Seamless Connections with TLC

Logan Library is now using LibrarySolution as its integrated library system (ILS) and TLC•Go! for its mobile app from The Library Corporation (TLC). TLC completed the migration services from the SirsiDynix ILS for the high-circulating single-site library earlier this year. The library is looking forward to taking advantage of the seamless connection between the ILS and mobile app.

Located in Logan, Utah, the library serves about 55,000 residents with approximately 113,000 titles. It has been operating at a temporary location while waiting for construction to be completed on a new 35,000-square-foot building. Historical circulation has been around 700,000 per year, prior to the pandemic and construction. The staff and community can now look forward to a building, ILS, and mobile app that can handle the amount of potentially enormous traffic the library receives.

Unhappy with the experience with their previous ILS, library staff began searching for a new system. Karen Clark, Director of Logan Library, explained, “Our main reason for choosing TLC is we wanted a vendor that was more responsive to our questions.” TLC provides industry-leading support services across all products at all stages.

The library also hoped to improve in other areas, as Clark continued, “We wanted a better OPAC experience for our patrons, we wanted an app for our patrons, and we were ready to make some changes. We needed to find a system that fit our budget better and was a better fit for our patrons and staff.”

Library staff appreciated the attention provided during the migration to LibrarySolution. Clark shared, “I was pleased with how smoothly most of it went and how we were able to solve problems quickly. The team was so responsive to our questions and concerns.” Clark’s comments mirror those of countless customers who value the TLC’s commitment to ensuring library staff are comfortable and experienced in making the transition smooth for their patrons.

Once the ILS was in place, the library began the process of implementing TLC•Go!, the feature-rich mobile app available via Android and iOS. TLC•Go! allows patrons to manage their library account, place holds, renew items, and access library resources – all at their fingertips. The library appreciated the seamless compatibility between LibrarySolution and TLC•Go! and knows that the new products have already enriched the library experience for the community. Debbie Ogilvie, Librarian at Logan Library, said, “Overall it’s been a very positive move. I love seeing patrons use the app when I’m out in town, not at work.”

“Libraries often seek us out after hearing about our stellar reputation for customer support and seamless connections,” said Annette Murphy, CEO at TLC. “TLC libraries stay with us for many years for our commitment to high-quality service.” Staff and patrons alike appreciate the power and usability of TLC products, which is especially helpful at high-circulating locations. TLC strives to make the process of finding and checking out materials more effective and enjoyable for all.

Momentum Continues to Build for TLC•Go! Mobile App

TLCGo! addresses and surpasses our goals for introducing a library app,” exclaims Ruth Hayden, Technical Librarian at Smyrna Public Library (Georgia). “I would absolutely recommend TLCGo! for public libraries of any size.” The Library Corporation (TLC) is thrilled to announce that 16 more libraries have adopted TLCGo!, the feature-rich mobile app that offers seamless compatibility with CARLSolution, LibrarySolution, and LibrarySolution for Schools integrated library systems. The app has received rave reviews since its unveiling.

Libraries using TLCGo! repeatedly mention the power of the app to provide connections with patrons and resources, improve search experiences, and boost patron satisfaction. Ruth Hayden, thrilled with the app, went on to share, “We have been able to optimize multiple features to fit the needs of our community. The app has proven to be easy to manage and update. It is visually appealing and fun to use.”

Launched in 2021, TLCGo! allows Android and iOS users the ability to manage their library account, place holds, renew items, and access library resources, all at their fingertips. At a branch, the app provides easy access to a digital library card and tools for contactless service. Borrowers can check out by scanning the item barcode or tapping the smartphone near the RFID tag. Library staff can also enjoy the highly configurable Content Management System allowing for changes in logos, colors, menu layouts, and more.

The newest version of the app, released earlier this year, showcases exciting features including an updated user interface, reading tracker, Chromebook support, and 30 language options. With the addition of Chromebook support in the latest release, TLC anticipates a higher adoption rate across school districts. Additional features will continue to roll out in 2023 and beyond.

Middlesex School (Massachussetts), the first implementation of TLCGo! as a school library mobile app solution, has found that the app helps their students with everyday searches. “Having the library in the palm of your hand makes it so much easier for our students to find what they are looking for,” said Jeff Smith, Director of Warburg Library. “No more jotting down call numbers on post-it notes.”

Laura Hanson, Technical Services Manager for Waukee Public Library (Iowa), has appreciated the added connections that are now more possible, sharing, “Having an app has really helped us meet our patrons where they are. We have a very tech-savvy community, and the app allows them to connect to us in a more consistent way. We try to be patron-focused in our approach to library service, and the app allows us to do that.”

The emphasis on increased access and connection started with Bedford Public Library System’s (Virginia) experience with TLCGo! “This new app gives our patrons much better access to our catalog through the device they use the most,” said Julie Wyatt, Technology Librarian. “The app connects to our e-book providers, event calendar, research databases, and more — right at their fingertips!”

“We have heard only positives about our TLCGo! mobile solution,” remarked Annette Murphy, CEO at TLC. “That is a true testament to its capabilities and to the positive contributions of our implementation experts. Libraries continue to appreciate the opportunities for enhanced community connection that TLC software provides.”

TLC Partners with MessageBee for Enhanced Messaging Integration for Library•Solution Customers

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce a new partnership with MessageBee by Unique Management Services. With MessageBee, LibrarySolution customers can now turn correspondence, such as arrived hold or overdue notices, into personalized messages to send to patrons through recorded or voice-to-text phone notifications. This effort continues a TLC tradition of creating partnerships across the industry, including with vendors such as Patron Point, in order to provide library staff and patrons alike with better text and email notices, customization options, SMTP services, and more.

Ardmore Public Library, located in Oklahoma, joined the TLC family of libraries in 2022 and began using the MessageBee integration earlier this year. They were especially eager to start using notifications, which were unavailable in the library’s previous system. “Importance of the telephone notifications can’t be understated,” said Daniel Gibbs, Director at Ardmore Public Library. “Patrons love that.”

Jennifer Watson, TLC Director of Client Services, shared “We enjoyed working with the team at Unique Management Services to assist Ardmore Public Library in implementing MessageBee. It’s a powerful and customizable patron communication tool (hosted by Unique, so no additional equipment is needed), making it an essential asset for libraries looking to enhance their patron notice and communication strategies.”

Using MessageBee’s phone notification options, libraries can create messages for the eight different notices available in the system, including arrived holds, overdue materials, and automatic renewals. Notifications use a library-specific local number, making it less likely that a patron ignores the message. This number also provides an easier route for patrons to call back to their local library. In addition, voice messages have multiple language options that can be drawn from the “preferred language” field in LibrarySolution, meaning messages will be sent in the patron’s preferred language.

MessageBee also offers the ability to communicate with library patrons through email and short message text system (SMS) alerts. Similar to the phone notification process, library staff can combine existing notice reports available from TLC with MessageBee’s array of customization options to turn standard messaging into rich engagement tools.

Current LibrarySolution customers can contact support at support@TLCdelivers.com for more information on integrating with MessageBee, and TLC’s other incredible third-party partners. MessageBee integration with CARLSolution will be available in the coming months.

La Porte County Public Library Keeps Innovating with Move to CARL•Solution

The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce the completed implementation of the CARLSolution integrated library system for La Porte County Public Library (LPCPL) in La Porte, Indiana. TLC completed migration services for the eight-site library earlier in the year to facilitate partnerships with their local schools, implement native self-check software, and provide sleek new searching capabilities.

Fonda Owens, Director of LPCPL, shared their history of seeking an ILS that could help with their collaboration with their public school partners, which was important in their library’s mission. Through their Libraries 360 program, the library is able to share resources with educators and students all year. This includes Libraries 360 cards, which can be used at all LPCPL locations year-round, as well as access to e-Resources available online, anytime from home. They worked their way through several different vendors and found that the collaboration piece needed in their previous ILS was not fully functional, or the price to add that feature would be astronomical.

LPCPL finally found the functionality they had been searching for with TLC and started their journey in 2019 with the LibrarySolution ILS. As their needs and focus on school and community collaboration continued to grow, they began to explore TLC’s other ILS offering, CARLSolution, preferring to stay within the TLC family. Recognizing that CARLSolution customers are innovative, forward-thinking libraries, Owens states proudly, “I keep telling people, we think big around here.”

One aspect of the library’s big plans included adding self-check modules for the school partners they work with throughout the year to handle circulation and manage collections, in addition to the other branches. Owens shares that the school partners have been very excited about Self CheckConnect. The library is equally excited about collecting additional statistics through ad hoc reporting to offer the partners, with Owens asserting, “We have all kinds of hopes and dreams and plans for that data.”

The transition has gone smoothly for staff and community alike. Owens believes staff were less intimidated from the beginning because they were already comfortable with LibrarySolution. They appreciate the tremendous support provided by TLC, from having the training sandbox (Test environment) always available, to on-site training from the implementation team, to monthly customer care calls. Owens noted a big difference with TLC, saying, “It’s really nice to be able to meet with the product owners. That never happens with other companies. It’s different here with TLC.”

Cindy Phillips, Manager of Implementation and Training for CARLSolution, commented, “The La Porte staff were great to work with. They provide excellent library services to their community and are a great new partner with CARLSolution.”

With a similar patron interface, the La Porte community did not notice much change to service, except for two new features that have been quite popular: the new PIN option and the FRBRized group title display. Customers have been “absolutely delighted” with the ability to choose a shorter, quicker option for their PIN. However, the star has really been with FRBR, as Owens exclaims, “The grouped search results aspect to the catalog is pretty magical. I think it’s the way people are accustomed to searching these days.” The multi-award winning FRBR online catalog displays a single entry for a work instead of numerous entries for each format and edition. Doing so gives library users a clear and trustworthy view of the library collection.

Not wanting to focus solely on the public side of the switch, Owens also shared that the catalogers are really happy with how their cataloging and acquisitions tasks are going after the transition. As an ITSMARC contributor, LPCPL works diligently to maintain the quality of their records since they know ITSMARC subscribers in libraries all over the world rely on their accuracy. The high-quality online copy cataloging service from TLC provides access to over 81 million records, including both bibliographic and authority records. ITSMARC recently received a platinum distinction in LibraryWorks’ ninth annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs).

Part of the Northwest Indiana and Michiana regions of the Chicago metropolitan area, LPCPL serves a population of approximately 60,000. It includes over 210,000 titles and an expected 800,000 annual transactions.

TLC Commits to Eastwick College’s Success with Library•Solution

Eastwick College has successfully completed its first academic school year using LibrarySolution from The Library Corporation (TLC) as its new integrated library system (ILS). TLC’s user-friendly interface, staff solutions, and outstanding customer support, coupled with an enthusiastic peer recommendation, swayed the library to choose TLC over other vendors after CyberTools ceased operation last year. TLC completed migration services for the library in Ramsey, New Jersey, earlier in the year.

Eastwick College has over 2,250 active students. It offers five library locations across its campuses and carries more than 14,000 physical materials.

With their previous provider closing down, Eastwick began looking for a new ILS to implement for the school year. They sought a system that would serve students and faculty efficiently while also providing effective tools for library staff. Attractive ways to spotlight their collection and outstanding customer support also made their wish list.

The university put out a call on a listserv asking for recommendations. Among the community suggestions, TLC stood out to the director of library services at Eastwick College & the HoHoKus School, Sisalee M. Hecht, MSLIS, AHIP.

“A nearby college which offers similar programs to ours had recently switched over to TLC and I was so impressed,” Hecht shared. “Our new PAC is beautiful and our students and faculty love how modern the site is. I especially love ‘the carousel’ which highlights additions to our collection. And, the customer support and implementation teams are first rate. They made our switch to TLC seamless and easy!”

“We are truly pleased to provide such attractive and usable solutions to our customers,” shared Annette Murphy, CEO at TLC. “Our customer service is unmatched, from our first engagements, through implementation, and our continued support for years to come. The greatest compliments we receive from our customers are the recommendations for other libraries to join the TLC family.”
