TLC Wins Dual Modern Library Award Honors

The Library Corporation has added to its impressive list of accomplishments yet again, earning multiple 2021 Modern Library Awards. TLC not only received a Gold Level Award for CARLConnect Discovery but also the highly distinguished “Service of the Year” Award for TLC•Cloud Services. The MLAs were created to recognize the top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Only customers with experience using these products/services in their facilities were permitted to judge the products/services, resulting in a truly unbiased score.

CARLConnect Discovery, part of the CARLX™ library management platform suite, has long been recognized as one of the most patron-friendly, feature-rich discovery layers in the library industry. With an ever-evolving community of patrons, CARLConnect Discovery has always sought ways to truly innovate to meet the needs of tomorrow’s, not yesterday’s, libraries.

Recently, CARLConnect Discovery introduced FRBR/Grouped Title Displays into its Desktop and Mobile platforms. FRBR/Grouped Title Displays improves the usefulness of the catalog, alleviates sorting through multiple single results for the same title, and offers a clear view of what editions/formats are owned by the library to create a better searching experience for patrons and staff alike — all through dynamic content updates that can be influenced by library staff.

“[FRBR] just makes it so much easier for patrons to find what they want,” stated Celia Morse of The Library Network in Michigan.

TLC•Cloud Services being designated as “Service of the Year” is an incredible recognition of years of research, planning, and implementation for what has become the very best hosting platform in the library industry. Powered by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), TLC•Cloud Services offers:

  • High Performance — Combining the elasticity and utility of a commercial cloud with the granular control, security, and predictability of on-premise infrastructure, TLC customers utilizing TLC•Cloud Services expect high-performance and low latency.
  • SecurityTLC•Cloud Services incorporates integrated security services to protect data and control access using security-first design principles, including isolated network virtualization and pristine physical host deployment. This provides superior customer isolation compared to earlier public cloud designs plus reduced risk from advanced persistent threats.
  • ReliabilityTLC•Cloud Services boasts a target service uptime of 99.95%, benefiting from the high availability and redundancy capabilities of the Oracle Cloud Platform, Oracle Database Backup Service, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage Classic to provide the utmost reliability in the industry.
  • ScalabilityTLC•Cloud Services is built upon a deep and broad platform of cloud services which enables TLC to design and build applications in a scalable, secure, highly available, fault-tolerant, and high-performance environment.

“Much like our customers and libraries across the globe, TLC faced a challenging 2020 head-on,” stated TLC founder and CEO Annette Murphy. “Instead of downsizing and taking an approach of ‘waiting out the storm,’ we continued to innovate and provide the very best service and support to our customers. To begin 2021 with this announcement is a wonderful way to start a new year and maintain a momentum of innovation as we head into a brighter future.”

The Library Corporation Receives SERVICE of the YEAR in 2021 Modern Library Awards from LibraryWorks

The Library Corporation (TLC), a leader in enterprise-level software and library automation services, is thrilled to announce it has received Service of the Year in LibraryWorks’ seventh annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs) for TLC•Cloud Services.

The MLAs were created to recognize the top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Products and services were submitted in the fall using a simple application and then were posted on a private site with an enhanced description and attendant materials. These products were batched into small groups and sent to the LibraryWorks database of more than 80,000 librarians at public, K-12, academic, and special libraries. Only customers with experience using these products/services in their facilities were permitted to judge the products/services, resulting in a truly unbiased score.

Each judge scored the product on a numeric basis from 1-10 on a series of questions regarding functionality, value, customer service, etc. The service with the overall highest score was awarded the coveted Service of the Year award.

“TLC’s history and legacy are built upon innovations that have improved the workflows and operations for libraries all over the world,” stated TLC’s Founder and CEO Annette Murphy. “TLC•Cloud Services, which provides the most secure, high-performance hosting platform in the library industry, is the latest addition to TLC’s family of products and services, and being awarded Service of the Year is not only a wonderful acknowledgment of the value TLC•Cloud Services adds but it is also a powerful indication to libraries that TLC is building solutions with its eyes on the future.”

TLC•Cloud Services is a hosting platform powered by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and was released in early 2020. Advantages of TLC•Cloud Services include:

  • High Performance — Combining the elasticity and utility of a commercial cloud with the granular control, security, and predictability of on-premise infrastructure, TLC customers utilizing TLC•Cloud Services expect high-performance and low latency.

Jenny Newman, publisher and MLA program manager, said, “It’s hardly a surprise that TLC scored so well. They’ve been at the forefront of the industry since their company entered the market in 1974 and continue to innovate to this day.”

Bremen Public Library Joins the TLC Family!

The Library Corporation (TLC) is happy to announce that, in spite of the hurdles and challenges COVID-19 continues to present to the library industry in 2020, TLC’s family of customers continues to grow and thrive. The most recent library to join the TLC family is Bremen Public Library (BPL).

Located in Indiana just 30 minutes south of South Bend, this former iii Sierra library went live in early November on TLC’s 100% web-based Library Management Software, LibrarySolution®. In addition to utilizing LibrarySolution®’s award-winning software solutions, they also chose to implement TLC’s HostedSolution, allowing TLC to host and maintain BPL’s data and server environment.

TLC Completes Milestone Migration to TLC•Cloud Services

The Library Corporation (TLC) has completed its fifth customer migration to its latest cloud hosting model: TLC•Cloud Services. Five distinctive library systems from around the country and internationally have partnered with TLC to successfully migrate their integrated library systems into the new cloud platform, with more customers scheduled for migrations later this year and beyond.

TLC unveiled its third-generation hosting model, TLC•Cloud Services, at its annual user conference in October 2019, with the first customers making the migration as early as February 2020. Prior to the cloud model, TLC’s hosted customer data was held in a co-location model, with data services out of Ashburn, Virginia, and outside Denver, Colorado for LibrarySolution® and CARLX™ customers, respectively.

The cloud service hosting platform, provided via Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), adds an extra layer of data security to the already high level of security delivered on the co-location hosting solution. Additional features provided on the OCI platform allow TLC customers more geographic data residency and backup options. Chief Technology Officer for TLC, Justin Duewel-Zahniser, shared that the TLC•Cloud Services solution, “coupled with our policies and procedures and philosophy around handling customer data, gives customers one less thing to worry about as they navigate the 21st century security landscape.”

The first five TLC customers using TLC•Cloud Services have ranged distinctively in circulation size, geography, and migration history, and have included the following:

eBiblioFile Now Serves Former RBdigital Customers Enhanced Data

With the recent acquisition of RBdigital by OverDrive, TLC is pleased to announce that all former RBdigital customers are now eligible to utilize eBiblioFile, an on-demand MARC record service for eBooks and other downloadable titles. This service has been available to OverDrive customers as well as cloudLibrary™ by bibliotheca customers.

As libraries enter into the tenth month of a global pandemic, many are facing uncertain futures as they grapple with pending closures, social distancing guidelines and protocols, and a public that may be reluctant to enter indoor public areas. Neither public libraries nor school libraries are immune to this struggle.

One thing that many libraries can attest to is the growth and demand in eBooks. Julie Harder, a Teacher Librarian at Pattonville School District, shared, “Between August and November of 2019 compared to August and November in 2020, we’ve seen a 144% increase in our e-resource use. Since kids now know how to access books any time and any place, we’re going to continue to see this increased use. So I think we need to start putting more of our budget toward electronic resources.”

The next step after adding e-content to a library’s collection is for the library’s community to be able to discover the content in the catalog. Data-rich records are crucial for this to happen.

eBiblioFile was created to provide libraries with the very best data possible to enhance the discovery experience of a borrower. eBiblioFile automatically receives that information and delivers ready-to-load records for each title directly to the library. Records are RDA-ified, authority controlled, contain the library’s predefined custom fields, and have a URL link to the title on the eResource vendor website. These records are delivered within 24-48 hours and — at $1 a record — eBiblioFIle is ⅔ the cost of other vendors offering similar services with longer delivery times.

Since eBiblioFile’s creation in 2012, over 4.1 million records have been delivered to libraries all over the globe to enhance and improve data, discovery, and library usage.

About eBiblioFile
eBiblioFile is an on-demand service that creates and delivers MARC records with enhanced RDA fields for eBooks and other downloadable library titles. Records are delivered for every title, every time. Additionally, libraries can use eBiblioFile to receive RDA MARC records for previously ordered eResource titles, and can utilize the optional RDAExpress service to convert MARC records for traditional print titles to the RDA cataloging standard.

Now Live on CARL•X: OWLSnet Consortia Implemented New Integrated Library System 100% Virtually.

The newest library system to implement TLC’s CARLX integrated library software is the Outagamie Waupaca Library System’s shared automation network (OWLSnet). This library system, which went live on August 17, 2020, is a public library consortium consisting of 29 libraries with 49 locations that stretch across two library systems in northeast Wisconsin.

OWLSnet has many distinctions among CARLX’s family of customers. Not only is the library excited to experience CARLConnect Fill List for paperless holds pulling, but they are also one of the first systems using FRBRized views in CARLConnect Discovery and hosting through TLCCloud Services by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. OWLSnet is also the first customer to ever launch CARLX entirely remotely — without TLC staff on-site to assist.

“Halfway into our migration, we had to suddenly switch gears,” said Amanda Lee, OWLSnet Manager. Before the pandemic, their team would meet remotely with TLC, then gather in-person to go over migration workbooks. Once the pandemic forced the library to go virtual, they had to meet exclusively online, while figuring out what their workflows would look like with a new ILS in different phases of re-opening.

Lee went on to say, “It’s been a very positive experience during a very stressful time. The implementation team were pros all the way. I think having the strong project management plan helped keep us on track when everything was changing and up in the air.”

TLC’s CARLX team, located in Denver, switched gears on their end as well. TLC is proudly the industry’s leader in providing customized, hands-on, thorough implementation processes, and figured out how to provide the same level of service in an entirely remote environment. They established new ways of communicating with each other and their OWLSnet partners, while preparing to train library staff online, through instructor-led and independent exercises, and recorded content.

Cindy Phillips, TLC’s Project Manager leading the OWLSnet implementation, shared that, “Migrating a customer to a new system takes a strong team and that was even more necessary for the OWLSnet migration during a pandemic! We were fortunate to have such a great partner in OWLSnet to work with and a resilient team in Denver to pull it all off remotely.”

Start Spreading the “News”… Newport News Public Library Implements Library•Solution

Newport News Public Library (NNPL) recently joined The Library Corporation (TLC) family by implementing LibrarySolution® integrated library system software.

Located in Newport News, VA, this 5-location library system has a mission to “connect, inspire, enrich and empower,” which they have continued to do in the middle of a global pandemic.

Newport News Public Library selected TLC’s library management system prior to state-mandated shutdowns related to COVID-19 and did not let the pandemic derail their implementation. Working through the “new normal,” both NNPL staff and TLC implementation staff continued to move the implementation forward and the teams delivered the new software within the expected timeframes.

Adding additional challenges to the project, TLC — which prides itself on the most thorough implementation process in the industry and dedicated staff onsite to assist with the “go live” — handled all training and system launch assistance virtually. TLC is proud to share that for the first time in LibrarySolution® history, all training sessions were handled remotely, with trainer assistance and project managers standing by for virtual assistance. The success of the implementation team did not go unnoticed by Newport News Public Library staff.  “Thanks for all your hard work on these two days of LS2 Staff training,” stated John Curtis, NNPL’s Support Service Manager. He continued, “I think the sessions went well (and it’s your first fully remote training to boot). Your efforts are appreciated!”

“We are very pleased to welcome Newport News Public Library to the TLC family,” stated TLC founder and CEO Annette Murphy. “This implementation is indicative of the effort libraries are making to continue to support their communities through these trying times and TLC will continue to do whatever we can to support them in their goals.”

Library•Solution 5.6.1 is Here!

The Library Corporation’s latest major update to LibrarySolution® was recently released and customers are already complimenting the enhancements and new features found within version 5.6.1 of the Library Management System.

LibrarySolution is an integrated library system built to enhance a library’s operational efficiencies — and the enhancements to LS2 Inventory do just that. In addition to previous inventory workflows, LS2 Inventory now empowers RFID-enabled library systems to utilize an RFID inventory tool, such as Tech Logic’s award-winning CircTRAK shelf management wand, to process a collection faster and more efficiently. This is a continuation of the LS2 Inventory enhancements previously released in LibrarySolution version 5.5.

LibrarySolution version 5.6.1 extends the functionality of enriched content integration from ProQuest’s popular Syndetics Unbound currently seen in LibrarySolution‘s LS2 PAC discovery layer, by integrating Unbound directly into LS2 Cataloging. This allows Catalogers prior access to the enhanced content Unbound will publish on the public discovery layer, as well as the ability to report any content errors directly within the interface.

Another enhancement of note brings to life a request by library staff and borrowers alike: LibrarySolution will now notify borrowers automatically when their account is about to expire in the system. TLC’s mission is to provide an “outstanding and unexpected level of service” to its customers, and this functionality will enhance a library’s ability to do the same for their customers. Libraries that can reach a borrower prior to a service disruption (such as account expiration) will increase borrower support and engagement with library services.

Numerous other features and enhancements are also found in LibrarySolution version 5.6.1. In the words of System Services Librarian Margaret Miles of New Hanover Public Library in North Carolina, “It’s like Christmas in July in here!” For more information on these and other LibrarySolution product features, please find additional documentation on LSCommunity or reach out to a TLC representative today.

CARL Development Centered on Customer Priorities and Innovation

The Library Corporation (TLC) continuously and consistently develops CARLX, CARLConnect Discovery & Mobile, and CARLConnect Staff, making it the most innovative integrated library system in the industry. TLC’s commitment to working alongside customers as development partners fuels development investments TLC continuously makes to the CARL product platform. As a result of this collaboration, CARLX version 9.6.6, CARLConnect Staff version 1.6.2, CARLConnect Discovery version 3.6.1 and CARLX APIs version 1.9.7, are now available.

Beyond technical updates, the CARL team spent some time aligning mobile and desktop versions of CARLConnect Discovery, which was an overall priority of CARL customers shared at TLCU 2019, TLC’s annual user conference. This release addresses additional customer priorities that will extend into CARL’s second release coming later this year. Also included is a new implementation of Authorize.net Accept Hosted integration for eCommerce payments.

CARLConnect Staff 9.6.6 development focused on foundational changes to support TLC’s newest CARL customer coming on board this summer. The CARL team also added functionality that gives consortia libraries more flexibility in determining parameters for holds.

With CARLConnect Staff 1.6.2, TLC is excited to provide libraries with updates and refinements in order to allow staff to better serve their customers when dealing with fines and fees on the patron’s account. The CARL team has also advanced Fill List functionality to further meet ADA compliance requirements, adding changes in support of user-centered design.

In CARLConnect Discovery 3.6.1, via My Account in Mobile, TLC has revealed the ability to place Issue Level holds, see Saved Searches and Saved Lists, as well as patron Loan History, if opted-in to this feature. Libraries already enjoy CARLConnect Discovery’s landing page for marketing and highlighting their collections and now TLC has introduced general alerts and customer announcements to both desktop and mobile.

“TLC’s mission is to produce software that continues to engage our customers and meet the needs of their library community,” stated Ebony Pacheco, TLC’s Manager of CARL’s Product Management.  “The development completed in this release continues to highlight TLC’s responsiveness to our customers, to the library industry, and to emerging needs that can never be planned for, such as a global pandemic.”

The Library Corporation’s CARL team is proud to develop software that reflects the emerging needs of some of the busiest public and consortia libraries in the world.
